An electronic depiction of the sentencing of Brittney Griner on August 4th, 2022 in Khimki, Russia. Griner was found guilty of drug possession and smuggling and sentenced by Judge Anna Sotnikova to 9 years in a penal colony and a fine of 1 million rubles. Griner was arrested on February 17, 2022 at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport after two vape canisters containing cannabis oil were found in her luggage.
Griner has played for the women's basketball team UMMC Ekaterinburg in Yekaterinburg during the WNBA offseason where she has played center for the Phoenix Mercury since 2013. She is one of 11 women to receive an Olympic gold medal, an NCAA championship, a FIBA World Cup gold medal and a WNBA championship.
Addressing the court at the end of her trial and before sentencing, Griner told the court "My parents taught me two important things: one, take ownership of your responsibilities and two, work hard for everything that you have."
"That's why I pled guilty to my charges. I understand everything that's being said against me, the charges that are against me, and that is why I pled guilty," Griner said, addressing the judge through an interpreter from her defendant's cage. "But I had no intent to break any Russian laws. I never meant to hurt anybody. I never meant to put in jeopardy the Russian population. I never meant to break any laws here," she said. "I made an honest mistake, and I hope that in your ruling, that it doesn't end my life here."
Griner also addressed the political reality of her detention: "I know that everybody keeps talking about 'political pawn' and 'politics,' but I hope that is far from this courtroom."
On Dec 8th 2022, Griner was released in a prisoner swap that involved Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.
