An elaborate reconstruction of James Cleveland “Jesse” Owens 100m gold medal run before Hitler and a packed stadium at the controversial 1936 Berlin Olympics. Owens run, crowd and Olympiastadion are assembled into a composite image using approximately a thousand stills from newsreels and Leni Riefenstahl’s extensive film documentary Olympia.
The left panel shows the lighting of the Olympic flame, released doves and largely non-German spectators; the right panel has the official scoreboard and flag raising, the Nazi’s observation box and the zeppelin Hindenberg. In the foreground, Hitler, Göering and Goebbels observe with binoculars.
