A study for the Battle of the Somme, Two Peasant Women in Field is remarkable for its similarity to Van Gogh's Two Peasant Women in Field in Snow and is sized to the same dimensions. This simple 4 frame montage with painted sky signifies the end of post-impressionist emotionalism and the beginning of the photographed world of industrialized warfare. Its foregrounding of women harvesting in a field with troops preparing for the battle in the distance, is in itself an anti-war affirmation of life over war.
